This has been UPDATED for MARCH 2017. I added in arbitrary ratings for everything, and I completed Beyond Good & Evil for GotM and Adventures of Lolo for NotM. I played the shit out of the other GotM, Breath of the Wild, but I’ve become pretty bored with it and need a break, so I didn’t complete it this month and may not complete it for a few months. I didn’t make any other progress this month on previous GoTMs.

****Stats are since videogame log began on January 1st, 2015****

I played videogames for 141 hours and 35 minutes this month, which is a new personal record for me. My previous best was 116h25m in August 2015.

I also had a perfect month in that I played 31/31 days. This is the first time this has ever happened in my life, even excluding my videogame log dates.

Games I finished to completion this month were: Adventures of Lolo (NES), Beyond Good & Evil (GCN), BoxBoxBoy! (3DS), Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (3DS) [2nd Completion], Monster World IV (GEN), New Super Mario Bros. (NDS) [2nd Completion]

Here is a summary of the time I spent on every game I played this month [March 2017].
    1. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (NS) [75h20m]
    2. Beyond Good & Evil (GCN) [16h55m]
    3. Monster World IV (GEN) [10h40m]
    4. New Super Mario Bros. (NDS) [09h15m]
    5. Has-Been Heroes (NS) [06h00m]
    6. Adventures of Lolo (NES) [05h25m]

    15. Blaster Master Zero (NS) [00h30m]
    16. 1-2-Switch (NS) [00h15m]

My 2017 Most Played List, with BotW, BGE, MW4, and NSMB joining the top 10 and ALBW increasing it’s ranking, is now
    1. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (NS) [75h20m]
    2. Paper Mario (N64) [35h50m]
    3. Beyond Good & Evil (GCN) [16h55m]

    9. New Super Mario Bros. (NDS) [09h15m]
    10. Super Mario Sunshine (GCN) [08h35m]

With Breath of the Wild moving from unranked to #1 and A Link Between Worlds moving from unranked to #8 (Pokemon Moon and Pokemon White were bumped off the top 10), my all time top 10 most played list is now

I had a very bad month GotM wise as I only completed the NotM. I plan for May to be huge in terms of completing and catching up.

GOALS FOR MAY 2017: Complete Final Fantasy V, Suikoden, Super Metroid, Mischief Makers, & Sweet Home. Play 10 more rounds of Ikaruga, and possibly beat the dark stages in Mega Man 3. Start Suikoden II although it sounds kinda long, so might take awhile to beat.

It was a nice month for Game of the Month, as I completed many of my goals. I still have some catching up to do, but with two somewhat shorter games this month, I should make some progress.

GOALS FOR JUNE 2017: Complete Sweet Home, Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut, Guerilla War, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, & Super Mario 64. I will also be playing ARMS for sure this month, and possibly some more Breath of the Wild if the DLC is released at E3. I’d like to get started on Suikoden II as well, so we’ll see how that goes. I’m on the fence about Bayonetta and will likely quit it.

    10. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (PSP) [35h35m]

RECAP: It was a good month. I didn’t get to play as much as I wanted, but I’ve been immersed into the Fire Emblem series now and I want more. Sonic Adventure was garbage, and Guerrilla War was a very average, but fun game.

GOALS FOR JULY 2017: Complete Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, Ori and the Blind Forest, The Magic of Scheherazade, & Metroid II: Return of Samus. I will likely play more of Snake Pass and Super Mario Sunshine. I’m still on the fence about whether or not to continue Bayonetta. I am passing on the Breath of the Wild DLC for now, as it’s pretty terrible. I may pick that game back up whenever the DLC2 comes out. I will probably also buy Kirby’s Blowout Blast on the eShop this month and play that; we’ll see.

  • Mock says:

Don’t treat any of the following as a attack, I’m honestly amazed at the amount of data you’re able to track, Yoshi. You have a serious dedication to this, and admittedly a small part of me wishes to be as “productive” as you are at gaming…but,

In my opinion, playing games in this way turns something that is a fun hobby, into something more akin to a job. Making goals and tracking progression – sounds exactly like the productive mindset I use when at work. I like to use my hobbies to relax.

I started to hate doing photography the longer I worked at a camera store. It took a long time to recover after I left.
Now I don;t have those customers and there is no pressure to maintain professional appearances. Also, I made many of my images free of most copyright, so I don’t have to spend hours issuing DMCA takedown requests to a hundred different websites. If I have an image appear on a bunch of different international blogs, or spread all over Tumblr, its because I made the choice to allow that to happen. They’re no longer “stolen” images.
After taking these steps I feel much better about going out to shoot. Photography is fun again.

I would follow the same line of reasoning with games and e-sports, for example. If I had to play Smash Brothers 100+ hours a week and practice constantly to be the greatest competitive gamer, I would not enjoying gaming anymore.
If I had felt the need to document every 5 minute interval of a game I played, or every member of my party that died. I can’t imagine.

In the end, we’re obviously quite different, and that’s okay. Live and let live. 🙂

  • Yoshi says:

I definitely get what you are saying, and I don’t take it as an attack.

Statistics is something that’s always been incredibly interesting to me my entire life. I had a videogame log from 2005-2009 or so and then I kinda stopped updating it. I didn’t get anywhere near as much enjoyment out of videogames for awhile. For me, a very fun part of it is looking at the statistics of what I’ve done months or even years down the road.

I did use to log every little event that happened in a game back then. With my log now, it’s more of a “where is my progress at the end of my play session for today”. I know this is insane, but I truly feel like it does nothing but add to my enjoyment of videogames. It makes me want to play them more, and it’s also great for me with keeping track of the dozens and dozens of games I’m playing concurrently, to have a reminder of exactly where I am at, and to not forget to play it in general.

I talked to Kuro about this years ago and he mentioned that I likely have some form of hypergraphia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypergraphia).

I genuinely get immeasurable enjoyment out of logging, for whatever reason, and it never feels like a job. In the end, I think that is what matters most. I mean people run 10 miles a day for fun and enjoyment, while that seems miserable to me.
