Certainly a depature from Super Mario Bros. 1/LL/3 and boy do I like it. It isn’t as good as SMB3 but it has all these cool quirks like multiple playable characters with unique abilities and turnip tossing! Weird worlds, weird enemies, weird not-being-able-to-jump-on-bad-guys… It’s almost as if it’s an entirely different game that isn’t Mario with Mario just tossed in or something. It is different but so much better than SMB1/LL that is isn’t even funny! A colorful fun entry into the amazing Super Mario Bros. series.

It’s pretty unique given its origins in doki doki panic and set a few traditions for the series and its way better than Japanese Mario 2 and the original so ya. Not my favorite Mario game but not Mario Odyssey either heh (just kiddin 1 is probably worse). It’s got pretty good variety but IMO Mario 3 is where it’s at!!!!

Thought this game was a bit weird when I played it. Didn’t feel anything like the first mario to me, just kind of has always stuck out to me. This game kinda sticks out and I’ve always thought of it as not a real mario game cuz they basically stole it and japan got the real one. I just really don’t like this game.

Now here is a game I’ve played through dozens of times so let me tell you why it’s so great. The world is strange and mysterious, you never know what’s coming next; digging down under pyramids, shrinking into jars, grabbing taboo keys, being chased by tribal spirit masks, tugging on a weed and uprooting a rocket ship, riding a ladybug up a vine into the clouds! On top of all that you’ve got 4 characters with different abilities to choose from. You can take on the levels your way, slow and easy floating over all your troubles with Toadstool, fast and furious with Toad, all around balanced jumpman Mario, or super gay floaty twinkle toes Luigi. Some characters are better in certain situations, there are multiple ways to tackle levels. The game can be challenging, you’ll have to work for your power ups, those mushrooms aren’t always hidden in obvious locations. The boss fights are pretty great, you definitely feel accomplished clearing each world for the first time.
I’ll put this game in the A tier of NES games, the B tier of Mario games, 2 thumbs up from me, and compared to every other game made I’ll give it 4/5 stars.
