Why don't you people like Breath of the Wild? Can it be the obvious GOTY, but the worst Zelda? I am baffled.

Combining the overall ranking of the 5 other people (not including myself) who made a Zelda list, they rank in at a percentile of only 19.18% Meaning on average, they prefer 80.82% of other Zelda games (that they've played) before BOTW.

Stats can lie, but opinions won't. 4/5 like Skyward Sword more than Breath of the Wild! I honestly cannot believe BOTW is that bad in the eyes of any person.
Please tell me what you don't like about Breath of the Wild. Enlighten my enfeebled mind!

I could understand how a sort of jealously hatred might be cool among those people who don't yet have a Switch, or won't bother with a Wii U.
However, both of those camps have never played the game. I've got 145 hours in it so far, and they've all been bliss. I can't remember the last game I played with such longevity and compelling gameplay.

I don't want to attack anyone's choices or tell them why they could be wrong, I just want to know why.

Hello I did not make a list,  perhaps I will soon! But let me just say this... as a LARGE Zelda fan I say Breath of the Wild is lacking on the more traditional aspects of the series. There is a lack of items which in turn effects the already short dungeons with samey puzzles and awful bosses. The altering dungeon gimmick is nice but the game relies on 3 runes to build brainteasers on and it gets old.  Here is a comprehensive list of my quarrels with Breath of the Wild.

  • Enemy variety (where r my dodongos and redeads?)
  • Dungeon Length
  • Dungeon Count
  • Dungeon Bosses
  • Item selection (C'mon let's build dungeons centered around one item again and over develop what can be done with said items)
  • Maybe a little too big? Let's try and get a more dense and to the point overworld next time.

That's mostly it. With all of this said, the game is still good and I really like how open the game is. I think the game could be a lot better if it used ALBW's ideas for dungeons/items and it can still remain as open as ever.

Very good very good. I really miss getting a Hookshot, it's true.
When I first found the giant boomerang weapon I held onto it for safe keeping.

Change is good though, all those dungeons with the same mechanics game after game was getting old. I felt the developers were not being creative anymore.

I love the Shrines though, I think of them as mini-dungeons. Instead of a gauntlet of puzzles in a traditional dungeon, you take them in bite-sized chunks. Really good for portable gaming imo.

The second DLC is going to take care of my biggest Zelda pet peeve: what happens after you defeat Ganon?

He has the exclusive ability to fast travel all over Hyrule, he would open up a priority courier business that would put the running mailman to shame.  After a few years of that he can retire and do Purah's reverse aging thing, then eventually Ganon will reappear and the cycle will continue.

Let's take a moment to praise BotW! It's easy to rag on what we don't like right? Well let's make a list for things I enjoyed people!

  • World Scale
  • Open design not hindered by anything other than the introductory area. (Exploration is Zelda's essence....... and dungeons heh)
  • Traversal of the overworld was handled well, it's fun to go from point A to B. (Climbing/Gliding/Surfing)
  • Willingness to break conventions with a major long-running franchise. (Exciting times! The ambition shows and it was handled well for the most part.)
  • The emergent gameplay made combat interesting, mix that with the runes and you got some fun ways of tackling situations.
  • Other stuff idk what though just good game all around mostly

So yeah, good title and I really think the next game can learn a lot by focusing more on Zelda traditions being moved into this new open design.

BOTW suffers from open world fatigue. Many open world games have this problem. At first, everything is incredible, the world is massive, and the possibilities seem endless.

After a while, the world feels too big, looks too similar, and each nook and cranny feels just like the previous one you just saw. This especially gets bad in BOTW due to the lack of monster variety. You also spend too much time idle either running/climbing/riding that the time between action grows too far apart. It starts to feel like a chore. I've had this happen with many open world games and BOTW fell into this trap after a while. The story was not good enough to suck you in and motivate you to keep going. After a while, it just felt tedious getting around to do the same thing and then when you got to a major milestone (dungeons) they were really unsatisfactory.

That being said, the best cure for this that I have found is taking a break from the game. I've done this with other games and it's always the same - after an extended break everything feels fresh. I just recently picked BOTW back up after a long break and I'm enjoying it again, but I'm not sure for how long. I think AJs statement that to world was too big is accurate, but it also lacked focus - being open is great, but I think it also hurt the game in this regard.

Oh, it took me a long time to finish (giggity), I upgraded my Guardian armour set TO THE MAX before I entered the sanctum for the first time.
I don't think I'm a bad enough dude to collect all the Korok seeds, though. Got like 400 now, the last 90 or so thanks to the Korok mask.

I did all sorts of junk. Maxed out the Guardian Armor, did all the shrines and stuff. Not doin' all the seeds though. Not compelling enough.

It's just far too westernized and missing almost everything that makes Zelda great as a series.  If I wanted to play a game like this I'd play Skyrim or one of the other million clones.

It's a fun game, but it's extremely hollow and empty to me in comparison to the previous titles.  What Apple said pretty much summed up my complaints though.

I love BOTW and I've had so much fun with it, but yeah, I want to know what happens after Ganon is beat!  I also want more champion stories!!  But the game was amazing and the story wasn't in your face but you still felt for the champions and Zelda!  I definitely teared up a few times during some of those memories!

Right, they should rebuild all of Castle Town and Lon Lon Ranch and have wild festivals with lots of minigames like Bombchu bowling.

The DLC is about going around trying to help Kass find lost pieces of the Champion's Ballad. He already knows the song but you need the sheet music for all the different sections of the Hyrule Orchestra to perform.
Once Link gathers all that, then the party can really get started.

The major consensus among longtime players of Zelda is that the dungeons are the biggest flaw of BotW. GCL is proving that right here and right now.

Bah humbug, this game has like 125 dungeons it's pretty sweet. Aye, but I like ye dungeons of olde as well, the game could have had some traditional ones and still been open world.

Needs way more big interior areas with unique aesthetics that are built into the overworld seamlessly. I think this is the dream people dreamed when BotW's open world was announced.

The shrine are hardly dungeons. Little gimmicks that use the same couple tricks every time.
