70/100 first half is a chore and bore!!! luckily stage one of the knuckles half opens up with a fun boss and continues to deliver. if it weren’t for the knuckles half of the game it’d be a 30/100. gj knuckles. Images

49/100 I did myself a disservice by playing through this game in one sitting, and I’m trying to avoid having that negatively influence this review. Sonic games have always been sort of schizophrenic to me – they seem to encourage speed (not speedrunning, but actual non-stop movement and action), yet punish it at the same time with unavoidable damage and obnoxious roadblocks. The games themselves are entertaining enough in very small doses, but get old quickly as every level is essentially the same thing with different art. It was a grind, to be sure, with marginally entertaining boss fights to break the monotony. It’s a game I’m sure I would have enjoyed more had I spread out my gametime over the course of a week or so, but is still overall pretty average. Clear Screen

85/100 I never realized how much better Sonic 3 & Knuckles is than Sonic 2 until now, the powerups of fire, lightning, and water add depth and help to temper the often frustrating moments of Sonic. It also has much better platforming sections that have your palms sweating. The best level is obviously Ice Cap Zone Act 1, it is a clever design and has the best music in the game. Images

52/100 This game is a drastic improvement on Sonic 1 & 2, but that isn’t saying too much. The level and platforming design in Sonic games is pretty atrocious and the main saving grace in this game are some nice, challenging boss fights at certain parts. I’m not a big fan of the music for the most part. It’s ok, it’s a playable game and a piece of gaming history, but when it comes to platformers it is very, very average. I can see where it’d be a fun game if you are in to speedrunning, and only if you are in to speedrunning. Game Time: 04h50m. Clear Screen. Game Log.
