I'm NOT ONLY going to make a list, I'm going to list reasons I like these games!!!!!!

1. Dragon Quest 5

The story is very good here, and although the grind is typical of a normal JRPG the characters are very strong in this one and the plot line has a million twists and turns I didn't really see coming. I think this is my favorite dragon quest game overall. I don't want to spoil what I like about the story but it is a very emotional game and it will stay with me forever so get out there and try it gamers!!!!

2. Final Fantasy 5

This game has always left a lasting impression on me, and in addition to really liking the story and characters (I mean, you have an old man in your party for one thing, that's cool as fuck), I have always loved the job system in RPGs, and I think FF5 is one of the best games at implementing it. There's so many viable options for your party and they are all fun, and you can do so many different things with your builds. Really solid Final Fantasy and my personal favorite.

3. Deus Ex 1

If this counts (and it should, since it's very RPG mechanic heavy, much more so than the newer ones), it has one of the best stories I've seen in a game. Political intrigue and conspiracies abound in this game, and the writing is so good that it is still relevant today. There's things in this game that look like they're written about the Trump era of America even though the game came out in 2000 (and they predicted the Twin Towers being destroyed ahead of time!!!). The combat is good, the augmentations you get are cool, and it's basically as much of an RPG as a shooter can get, since if you don't level up your weapon skills you will be pretty inaccurate, so you have to choose what guns you want to be a specialist in (or just be kinda average at them all!). Very cool game and I still play through it every now and then.

4. Ys I and II

My first and probably favorite game in the Ys series. There is goofy bump combat where you run into enemies at an offset angle to deal damage that not everyone likes, but I love it because you never have to stop moving to kill enemies, there's no battles that take you out of the game or anything, and the music is the best I've heard in any RPG and possibly even game period, it's up there!!! The characters are really good and the plot is engaging. This is one game where it never feels like a grind to play, always enjoyable and very fun too!

5. Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys

This game is also a really good Ys game in the style of I and II, but the story is just as good and the music is still amazing. The combat is still there, so everything from I and II still applies, but this game still holds up today in my opinion. It has an interesting plotline, diverse and interesting characters and great boss fights that will challenge your gamer skills without feeling cheap, just overall a very solid RPG. Again, don't want to go into spoilers, but I am replaying this game at the moment and it is never boring.

I'm playing Suikoden II pretty soon and from what I've heard about it, if I like Suikoden that much it's going to easily be in my top 5.

These are all good responses from people who've never played Xenogears. Since everyone is explaining their choices, I'll do the same:

5) Final Fantasy 6

Timeless music. A strong cast where everyone is interesting because everyone was purposely designed as a main character. An original battle system where each character has a unique gameplay mechanic including one with street fighter moves (I wish more RPGs did this). Kefka.

4) Panzer Dragoon Saga

The combat system is new and unique; all fights are in the air and you spin around enemies in full circles to position yourself at their weak points. This is fun and appropriately matches the flying nature of the franchise. And it has a beautifully haunting post-apocalyptic setting that truly makes you feel alone in a world that's been drowned out. It's eerie, but pretty and serene at the same time. Saturn's inability to show much on screen at once actually helps this feeling, but whether or not that deserves praise is debatable.

3) Super Mario RPG

Everything about this game is amazing. The look, the music, the fun and addictive battle system that requires timing and feels like an action/rhythm game. Great scenarios where every part of the story is fun and makes you want to play more. You'd have to be some kind of demon to not love this game.

2) Chrono Trigger

If you need me to explain this one then there's no help for you. You're probably throwing puppies at trains right now.

1) Xenogears (by a mile)

Jesus Christ. I mean Jesus fucking Christ. This isn't just the best RPG but one of the greatest all time works of fiction. Imagine if the entire Star Wars franchise was crammed into one game and that's all there was to it. But it was also a lot more intelligent and dark and fucked up and anti-religious and has you basically killing God and fighting corrupt religious officials that are secretly turning their followers into mutants and is like Twin Peaks and Breaking Bad and Jacob's Ladder and Star Wars and 2001 rolled into one with giant robots. It has a fast and fun combo system that's still turn based but kinda feels like Street Fighter in battles. Amazing music, gorgeous art, great dialogue, interesting cast that doesn't feel like cardboard anime stereotypes. There are normal human relationships where people actually sleep together (unlike most JRPGs). I don't wanna give away spoilers but who and what the villains are is amazing. The overall plot is a dense allegory that covers the entire human condition, but at the same time, the main cast is down to Earth and understandable like the Star Wars cast so there's something for everyone. This is required playing for any gamer IMO.

I'm not a huge RPG fan in general so all my choices are mainly based on how fun and original the combat system is, ie what games are actually fun to control. Then the story, music, and atmosphere push them over the top. These are the five RPGs I truly love even though I'm not big on RPGs; five of the few that don't feel like a chore.
